About Us

our story

We hail from a small village in Bhuban block, Dhenkanal district of Odisha, a region renowned for its bell metal and bronze handicrafts. For generations, this cottage industry has been the pride of our land, producing exquisite handcrafted kitchen utensils and traditional art pieces. More than 10,000 artisans family have been directly or indirectly engaged in this craft, and many have received national and state awards for their dedication and artistry.

However, over time, declining demand, shortage of raw materials, and traditional marketing challenges have caused a severe downturn—resulting in 95% of these cottage industries shutting down. Many skilled artisans have been forced to abandon their ancestral craft.
Over the last three years, we traveled across India (Kumbakonam (TN), Baster (CG), Rampur (TG), Khagra and Bankura (WB), Mannar (Kerala), Tikamgarh & Betul (MP), Jalandhar and Amritsar (Punjab), Sangli , Kolhapur (Maharastra) and Muradabad and Banaras (UP) , observed that this struggle is not limited to Odisha—it’s a nationwide concern.

With a vision to revive these traditional crafts and empower artisans, we started our initiative in Chennai, where we have been professionally and culturally rooted for the past 20 years. Thus, “Bharatiya Hasta Shilpa Udyog” was born, operating under the brand name
www.hastashilpa.com.
